Teshuvot

The Trans Halakha Project’s Teshuva-Writing Collective is a team of 12 trans writers and researchers who have authored teshuvot that use the language of halakha to respond to questions about Jewish life and practice that emerge directly from trans people.

  • Given trans understandings of gender, who must undergo circumcision as part of their conversion process? What alternate rituals are possible in a gender-expansive framework?

brin solomon, “Conversion & Circumcision: A Trans Approach”

  • Is it permitted for a trans person experiencing dysphoria to tovel (immerse in a mikveh/ritual bath) while wearing a chest binder? Does this constitute a hatzitzah that invalidates the tevilah, or not?

R’ Jamie Weisbach, “Immersing in a Mikvah While Wearing a Chest Binder”

  • As a nonbinary person, am I still obligated in the practice of niddah? I guess what I’m asking is this: is niddah a menstruation practice or a woman’s practice?

R’ Jericho Vincent, “Genderqueer Torah on Niddah: Jewish Practices of Sacred Sexuality for Nonbinary Folks & People of All Genders”

  • What obligation do Jewish communities have to create gender-inclusive mikvahs? How should Jewish communal leaders respond to trans and/or non-binary Jews whose needs are not met by existing mikvaot in the local community?

    R’ Lara Haft, “Gender-Inclusive Mikva’ot”

  • How should we care for and relate to body parts removed during gender-affirming care?

R’ Willemina Davidson, “Caring For & Removing Body Parts Related to Gender-Affirming Care”
